Cancelling or Rescheduling Your Theory Test Without Losing £23
Published
To change or cancel your theory test without losing your £23, you must give at least 3 full working days' notice. Inside that window, you pay again for a new test, unless you qualify for one of DVSA's short-notice exceptions.
Here's how the notice rule actually counts days, how to reschedule, and the situations where you can still get your money back.
How much notice do you need to change or cancel?
Three full working days. The detail that catches people out is which days count:
- Monday to Saturday count as working days
- Sundays and public holidays do not
So for a test on Friday, the last safe day to change it is Monday. For a test on Tuesday, you'd need to change it by the previous Friday, because Sunday doesn't count. Count backwards carefully; a bank holiday in between pushes your deadline a day earlier.
How do you change or cancel the test?
Use the official GOV.UK services to change or cancel your test, with your driving licence number and booking reference. The change service lets you:
- Move your test to a later date
- Find an earlier test, if a slot opens up
- Change which test centre you take it at
Changing is free with the full notice, and you can use the same service to hunt for cancellations if you want an earlier date rather than a later one.
If you need help, DVSA theory test enquiries are on 0300 200 1122 (Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm) or theorycustomerservices@dvsa.gov.uk. Northern Ireland has its own separate service.
Can you get a refund if you cancel at short notice?
Sometimes. DVSA refunds short-notice cancellations for four reasons:
- Illness or injury that means you can't take the test, with a fit note or medical certificate
- Bereavement
- A school or college exam at the same time, with a confirming letter
- A stolen driving licence, with the crime number and the officer's contact name
Email DVSA with the subject line "Unavoidable short notice cancellation" and attach your proof. No proof, no refund.
What happens if you miss the test or arrive late?
You lose the fee. Arriving late counts as missing it: the test is cancelled and you have to book and pay again. The same applies if you turn up without your provisional photocard licence, so treat the documents check as part of the deadline.
Rebooking after a fail
If you fail, you must wait at least 3 working days before taking the test again. Use that gap deliberately: your result letter tells you which part you dropped marks on, which is exactly what to drill before the retake.
The cheapest way through all of this is to need only one booking. Drivingo's mock tests score you against the real 43/50 pass mark, so you know before test day whether you'd pass, and its AI coach turns your weak topics into strong ones before you sit down at the real thing.
